Through the Issues, Not Around Them
Sex. Death. Drugs. Violence. Child safety. Faith. Identity. The mind. The Skeptical Mystics podcast engages the hardest topics in human life — directly, with evidence, and with the forensic tools of honest investigation.
What Skeptical Mystics Is
Skeptical Mystics is the public voice of Life-CAHST, LLC — a forensic and educational services firm whose team includes a former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney, a forensic interview specialist, an educator and child development specialist, and an investigations expert.
The podcast is driven by three commitments: fruits, not faith (evidence and outcomes over belief); ideas over beliefs (pursuit of truth through inquiry, not confirmation); and through the issues, not around them (direct, honest engagement with topics most institutions refuse to address).
We are explorers of consciousness and the human mind, and investigators who apply forensic principles to everything: crime scenes, complex emotions, identity, relationships, and the realities of what it means to be human. Hunters of false prophets: any healer, protector, leader, or teacher who operates from dishonesty, without the competence or integrity they claim.
Matt — Child Advocate, Trial Attorney, Counselor of Law.
Carli — Subject matter expert in child sexual abuse and forensic interview methodology. Has spoken with children about these topics thousands of times.
Kristin K. Long, SEL-F · RYT 200 · RCYT · BS El. Ed. - Teacher — Owner and Director of Life-CAHST, LLC. Educator, child development specialist, Social Emotional Learning Facilitator, and yoga practitioner with thirty years of front-line experience.
H.C. — Former federal agent and investigations expert. Brings law enforcement rigor and the discipline of documentation to every discussion.
Current Series & Episodes
Breaking the Silence: What We Get Wrong About Child Sexual Abuse
The team introduces its framework — fruits, not faith; ideas over beliefs; through the issues — and digs directly into child sexual abuse with subject matter expert Carli. Topics: the myth of immediate disclosure, spiritual injury vs. spiritual experience, the guilt/shame distinction, grooming, engagement, and why prevention policies don't stop predators.
When the Home Is the Danger: Domestic Violence, Faith, and the Children Left Behind
The team examines the cycle of violence through the lens of high-demand religious family systems. What happens when patriarchal authority, doctrinal submission, economic dependency, and spiritual shame combine to prevent victims from seeking safety? With particular attention to young parents, many children, and the compounding harm done to those raised in authoritarian homes.
Talking About the Unthinkable: A Parent's Field Guide to Child Sexual Abuse
Carli, Matt, Kristin, and H.C. turn their expertise into 19 concrete, actionable recommendations for parents. Topics include body vocabulary, the "any feeling, any thought" rule, recognizing grooming, responding to disclosure without causing more harm, and why your calm in small moments is what determines whether your child tells you the big ones.
Investigating the Mind: A Forensic Approach to Complex Human Experience
Matt, Kristin, and H.C. discuss how to apply the tools of forensic investigation to consciousness, emotion, and identity. Topics include: the "crime scene" of complex emotions, the unreliability of testimony, the danger of narrative over perception, and what it means to consider alternatives in every domain of life.
How Disclosures Actually Happen: Piecemeal Disclosure, Disclosure Disasters, and What to Do
The second installment in the child sexual abuse series. The anatomy of disclosure — how it actually happens, why it is rarely immediate or complete, what piecemeal disclosure looks like, and the devastating consequences when disclosures are met with disbelief. With subject matter expert Carli.
